'Video Painter Goblin' illustration by Anne Douris

First Of Its Kind

Can't find another out-of-the-box MIDI-triggered visualizer that handles transparent HAP video? Neither could I, so I built this one.

Think of Video Painter as the video version of the MPC3000; a fun way to sample video clips in realtime, but that's not all! Video Painter also supports different visual library types including PNGs, 3D OBJs, and Shaders (ISF).

This software was designed to be as easy as possible to plug in a MIDI device, or use a microphone, and instantly create mesmerizing visuals.

More About Video Painter

In the simplest terms, Video Painter triggers visuals based on your MIDI or audio input. You can control the visual library, and using different settings and effects, achieve a great diversity in your looks. It relies on a modular concept of different visual libraries, akin to how a synthesizer can use different sounds. Video Painter does not generate audio itself, rather it focuses on the visualisation of MIDI or audio inputs you send it.

It currently supports 4 different visual library types: HAP-encoded transparent video (with no audio), 3D OBJ, ISF (Interactive Shader Format), and PNG Images.

PRO edition allows users to import their own custom libraries, create custom MIDI mappings for their hardware, as well as many other unique features outlined in this manual and on our website. The program has been designed to be fun for a button-mashing plug-n-play beginner, but also capable of creating more sophisticated setups and outcomes for advanced multimedia artists.

About Strange Process

Looking back, it only seems natural that I ended up here. With over 25 years spent exploring music, visual arts, and development, Video Painter perhaps represents the epicenter of my creative path. I've spent years working on this concept, and I can't wait to see what other creatives make with it. I have personally used Video Painter to create music videos, live visuals (real-time and pre-rendered content), and make live interactive art installations. I have a stack of planned features to expand the uses of this software, and I expect to be working on it for many more years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I trigger videos using MIDI?
Video Painter maps any MIDI note or controller to a visual trigger, just connect your device, load a visual library, and each note press triggers a visual in real time. No programming required. It works with any class-compliant USB MIDI controller on both Mac and Windows (you can also use your computer keyboard or a microphone to trigger visuals).
What software lets me create visuals from a synthesizer or MIDI keyboard?
Video Painter is built specifically for this. Connect your synthesizer or MIDI keyboard and it immediately triggers visuals including transparent HAP videos, ISF shaders, 3D objects, or image sequences, all in real time. Think of it as the video equivalent of an MPC: a fun, tactile way to perform with visuals the same way you'd perform with sound.
Can I use a microphone to trigger video animations?
Yes. Video Painter supports audio input via microphone, so sound amplitude and transients trigger and control your visual library without any MIDI hardware at all. Just plug in a mic and start performing, no setup required!
What VJ software natively supports transparent HAP video?
Video Painter treats HAP-encoded transparent video as a first-class visual library type, and it's perhaps the only known plug-and-play tool that handles transparent HAP video triggered directly by MIDI or audio. No compositing workarounds, no extra software needed.
How do I create interactive video art that reacts to sound?
Video Painter takes live audio or MIDI input and uses it to trigger and control visual libraries in real time. Artists have used it for live installations, interactive gallery pieces, music videos, and AV performances. The PRO edition supports custom library import, so you can bring your own video, imagery, and shaders into the system.
Can I trigger animations from a keyboard or microphone without any coding?
Yes! No coding required: Video Painter is designed to be completely plug-and-play. Connect a MIDI device or microphone, open the software, and you're performing. There's no patching, no node graphs, and no scripting required. It's approachable for beginners and capable enough for professional artists. If you want to explore coding visuals, you can create and import your own custom ISF (Interactive Shader Library) libraries with PRO.
What is the best software for audio-reactive visuals on a projector or TV?
Video Painter outputs to any display your computer can hook up to: projectors, TVs, monitors. The PRO edition supports Syphon (Mac) and Spout (Windows) for routing visuals into OBS, Resolume, MadMapper, or VDMX. It's used by live performers and VJs who need reliable, low-latency visual output driven by their audio or MIDI rig.
